As unappealing as it is to say, this Yuletime beverage is pretty delicious! (Not to mention it is also well-suited to outdoor gatherings on chilly afternoons.)
1 Bottle of Red wine
⅔ Cup Bourbon (or Vodka, if you prefer)
½ C Sugar
2 Tbsp Orange Zest
2 ½ Tbsp Raisins
2 tsp Cardamom
1 Thumb-sized piece of ginger root
2 Sticks of Cinnamon
1 Apple, core removed and sliced *Optional
⅓ C whole almonds
- In a small saucepan, combine the Bourbon (or Vodka) with the raisins. Warm gently and allow to soak for a minimum of 15-20 minutes.
- In a separate larger pot heat the red wine together with the ginger root, sugar, orange zest, cardamom, cinnamon stick, and cloves. Heat to 175 F and let simmer for at least 2 minutes.
- Remove from heat and let steep for at least 1 hour. Then strain it to remove the spices.
- Reheat to serve. Add a few almonds, bourbon-infused raisins, apple slices, orange slices, and grapes to each glass.
